As I write this, I’m getting ready to attend the October 18th No Kings protest. Peaceful protest is one way to speak up against what is happening to our country, but these big events happen only so often. What can you do to make a difference on any given day?
Card Campaign is one good answer. This is an organization that creates topic-specific cards that you can share with family, friends, or strangers. Each card addresses some critical issue regarding what Trump and his administration is trying to do to destroy democracy and civil life in our country. Here are some recent examples:
- Freedom of Speech
- America on the Brink
- Our Voting Rights
- Project 2025: Dismantling American Democracy
In addition to providing the cards, and instructions and resources for how to print them, they also provide help for how to share them. And they provide specific suggestions for Introverts, Extroverts, and In Between-troverts.
I would encourage you to find a card or two that resonates with you, print some out, and share them with friends, neighbors, or strangers. In resisting autocracy it is essential to remember that doing anything is far better than doing nothing. The autocrat counts on you believing that nothing you can do will make a difference. That is false. It is essential that you take whatever steps you can to ensure that our American democracy survives this crisis and endures even past its first 250 years.
