Should the US force Ukraine to surrender to Russia?

Trump is currently forcing Ukraine to concede everything, and Putin to concede nothing. Ukrainians will die, and Putin will be emboldened to attack again.

From The Atlantic (gift article): “At least the Oval Office meeting held by President Donald Trump and Vice President J. D. Vance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was held in front of the cameras. False friendliness in public by Trump and Vance, followed by behind-the-scenes treachery, would have been much more dangerous to the Ukrainian cause.

Instead, Trump and Vance have revealed to Americans and to America’s allies their alignment with Russia, and their animosity toward Ukraine in general and its president in particular. …

We’re witnessing the self-sabotage of the United States. “America First” always meant America alone, a predatory America whose role in the world is no longer based on democratic belief. America voted at the United Nations earlier this week against Ukraine, siding with Russia and China against almost all of its fellow democracies. Is this who Americans want to be? For this is what America is being turned into.”

From Axios: Sen. Mark Kelly brings back horror stories from Ukraine: “Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) spent the weekend in Ukraine gathering harrowing information on the impact of President Trump’s pause on military aid and information sharing.

Why it matters: “When you negotiate the end of a conflict, you want to be negotiating from a position of strength,” Kelly said. “What the administration did — cutting off weapons to Ukraine and cutting off intelligence — is the exact opposite of that.”

Zoom in: Kelly told reporters Monday afternoon that in just a matter of days, the pause on intelligence sharing has already hurt Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.”

Since Kelly’s visit, Trump has lifted the pause on intelligence sharing, but he has been negotiating directly with Putin on a ceasefire. So far, Putin has made no concessions, and Trump is forcing Zelensky to make many. If this continues, the result will be to force Ukraine to either defeat or surrender.
